A young labourer's night out in Sydney's CBD turned to tragedy after he was allegedly kicked in the head during a dispute over an iPhone. The 20-year-old victim, Francis Wilson, lost a portion of his skull and suffered severe brain trauma during the early-morning brawl near World Square on September 21, 2025. He has since undergone emergency surgeries and is currently in a rehabilitation center, working to regain basic motor functions.
Police allege the incident began when French national Ismail Belhout initiated a scuffle over his phone, leading to Wilson being dragged down and kicked. The victim's head hit the pavement forcefully, causing him to lose consciousness. Belhout, who arrived in Australia shortly before the alleged attack, has been charged with reckless grievous bodily harm and affray. He was granted bail in December 2025 under strict conditions.
Wilson's family reports that he is facing further major surgery to protect his brain, as part of his skull is missing. The devastating injuries have profoundly impacted his life. Another French national is also facing court proceedings related to the incident, which occurred less than a month before the alleged assault.
