Summary

- The vessel, Sea Owl I, flew a Comorian flag and is on EU sanctions lists.
- This is the second such boarding near Trelleborg in less than a week.

The Swedish coast guard successfully boarded and secured a suspected stateless tanker, the Sea Owl I, within Swedish Baltic Sea waters. This marks the second such intervention in less than a week, underscoring heightened maritime security concerns.
The 228-meter tanker was observed flying the Comorian flag, leading authorities to suspect it was operating under a false identity. Further investigations revealed the ship is also included on the European Union's sanctions list.
Authorities cited significant risks to maritime safety and the environment as the reason for the intervention. The ship was apprehended off the coast of Trelleborg, a southern Swedish town. This operation closely followed a similar boarding on Friday of the ship Caffa, which was sailing under a Guinean flag near the same location.
