Ronald Dowling, 66, received a two-year suspended prison sentence for causing death and serious injury by careless driving. The incident occurred on October 26, 2023, when Dowling aquaplaned in heavy rain, striking Sharon Berry's car. Ms. Berry suffered catastrophic injuries and passed away in January 2024. Her son described the loss as immeasurable, noting she would never meet her grandchild.
Two other individuals were seriously injured in the crash. Dowling's wife was left paralysed, while their friend, Jane Beedell, sustained multiple fractures and other severe injuries, leading to prolonged hospitalisation and ongoing mental health struggles. Despite wet conditions, Dowling was travelling at 76mph just before losing control.
Dowling, from Caerphilly, had previously pleaded guilty to the charges. The judge stated his consequences should last a lifetime. He was also disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to complete community work. Dowling expressed deep remorse for the loss of life and the injuries caused.
