Wrestler Denied Bail Again in Murder Case

A Delhi court has once again denied bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is implicated in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. The court's decision on Friday came as it heard Kumar's latest bail application.
The incident dates back to May 2021, when Sagar Dhankar and his friends were allegedly taken to Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium and assaulted. Investigators state Dhankar died from severe brain damage caused by blunt force trauma sustained during the assault. Two of his friends were also injured.
Sushil Kumar has been in custody since his arrest shortly after the incident. He was briefly granted interim bail in July 2023 for necessary knee surgery. In October 2022, serious charges, including murder and criminal conspiracy, were formally framed against him.
Previously, the trial court had expressed strong disapproval of the alleged actions. The court noted that such incidents reflect a disregard for law and order, allowing personal disputes to be settled violently. Given that charges have been framed and the trial is underway, the court found no justification for releasing the former Olympian on bail at this juncture.
