Summary
- Susan Smith is eligible for parole again after serving 30 years.
- She was convicted of drowning her two young sons in a lake in 1994.
- Smith received a disciplinary charge in August 2025 for contacting a filmmaker.

Susan Smith, who was convicted of drowning her two young sons in John D. Long Lake in 1994, is seeking parole again. The 53-year-old has been incarcerated for 30 years and is serving a life sentence for the tragic deaths of 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander Smith.
Her previous parole bid in November 2024 was unsuccessful. The parole board cited the extreme nature of the crime and Smith's disciplinary record as reasons for denial. Smith's offenses in prison included a charge in August 2025 for communicating with a victim and/or witness after speaking with a documentary filmmaker, a violation of prison rules. This was her first disciplinary action in nearly a decade.
If Smith's current parole application is denied, she will have the opportunity to apply again in two years. She was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murder in July 1995.
