Summary
- 1,401 kg of toxic paneer worth over Rs 28 lakh seized in Surat.
- Illegal unit used industrial acids and Palmolein oil for production.
- The racket operated unhygienically for two years, supplying 400 kg daily.

A significant health hazard was uncovered in Surat, Gujarat, following a raid on an illegal paneer manufacturing unit in the Pandesara area on March 3, 2026. Officials discovered paneer being produced with hazardous industrial acids and Palmolein oil, a stark contrast to typical food-grade ingredients.
During the operation, about 1,401 kilograms of paneer, stored in unsanitary conditions, along with Palmolein oil, chemicals, and machinery, were confiscated. The total value of seized materials amounted to Rs 28,44,170. Laboratory tests confirmed the paneer was sub-standard and a grave risk to public health.
Investigations revealed the illicit operation had been ongoing for nearly two years, with an estimated daily production of 400 kg. This toxic paneer was distributed to markets, hotels, eateries, and street vendors throughout Surat, leading to widespread public consumption.
The unit, despite operating in Surat, reportedly held a license from Maharashtra, suggesting a circumvention of local regulations. An FIR has been filed against the prime accused, Mahesh Kumar Sharma.
Medical experts have warned that consuming paneer made with industrial chemicals can cause severe gastrointestinal issues, liver and kidney damage, and potentially life-threatening conditions like kidney failure. Strict measures have been implemented under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to curb such practices and ensure food product integrity. Consumers are urged to read labels carefully and report suspicious food items.
