Supreme Court Intervenes for Acid Attack Victim
9 Oct
Summary
- Supreme Court ordered full treatment for acid attack survivor.
- Hospital asked victim to seek care elsewhere, citing no burn ward.
- Law mandates free medical care for acid attack victims at all hospitals.
In a significant intervention, the Supreme Court has mandated that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital provide full medical treatment to an acid attack survivor. The court's order came on Friday, October 7, 2026, following an urgent mention regarding the victim's care.
The survivor, who suffered an acid attack on October 6, 2026, in Delhi's Bhajanpura area, was reportedly asked by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to transfer to Safdarjung Hospital. This occurred despite Section 397 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, which mandates free medical treatment for acid attack victims at all public and private hospitals.
The Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, noted the alarming facts presented. The court directed Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to keep the victim as an indoor patient, covering all costs for medicines and procedures, including plastic surgery, until she is fit for discharge and only requires outpatient care.
The victim had initially sought treatment at GTB Hospital before being admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on October 6, 2026. However, substantive medical treatment was reportedly not provided, leading to the appeal for urgent judicial intervention.
