A 15-year-old Class X student at a government-aided girls' higher secondary school in Trichy's Ponmalaipatti unexpectedly gave birth to a baby boy in the school hostel on Monday evening. The student, originally from Cuddalore district, went into labour within the hostel, prompting the school administration to immediately transfer her to the Trichy MGMGH for necessary medical attention. Authorities, including the police and the district child protection officer, were alerted to the situation.
The school education department has launched an inquiry into how the student's pregnancy went undetected and to identify any potential lapses in monitoring student welfare. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest child marriage has been ruled out. The girl was reportedly in a relationship with a 19-year-old man from Kurinjipadi in Cuddalore district, which led to the pregnancy. Ponmalai AWPS police have initiated a POCSO case, which is expected to be transferred to the jurisdiction of the boy's native place.
Both the newborn and the student are currently under medical care at the hospital. Child protection authorities are actively monitoring the situation and will take charge of the student, handing her over to the child welfare committee following her discharge from the hospital. Sources indicate the baby's low birth weight may have concealed the pregnancy from school officials.
