Joshua Michals, a 26-year-old Goldsmiths student with aspirations of becoming a filmmaker, has been convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Zhe Wang. The brutal stabbing occurred in Ms. Wang's bedroom, leaving friends and family of Michals 'dumbfounded' by the unexpected violence.
Originally from Bloomingdale, Illinois, Michals came from a financially stable family and had no prior indications of violent tendencies, according to his acquaintances. Despite his comfortable upbringing and career ambitions, a jury found him guilty of murder at the Old Bailey.
During the trial, Michals attempted to claim self-defense and also tried to shift blame onto the victim. He delayed calling emergency services for over three hours after the attack, prioritizing contacting his father for legal advice and disposing of evidence.
