Summary
- Thieves used key cloning technology to steal the vehicle.
- The family's LandCruiser was worth $80,000.
- The stolen vehicle was later found destroyed.

A family's anticipated trip around Australia was abruptly halted when their $80,000 Toyota LandCruiser was stolen on March 9. The vehicle, purchased with a significant portion of their life savings, was taken from Victoria's Mornington Peninsula using advanced key cloning technology. This method, which can bypass car security systems in as little as 20 seconds, has seen a dramatic increase, with thefts rising by approximately 250% over the past three years.
Victoria Police reported that around 30 cars are stolen daily using this technology in the state. Nearly 850 LandCruisers were suspected to have been stolen via key cloning in 2025, a sharp rise from previous years. The theft left the Kent family, including their four young daughters, stranded and heartbroken. They were forced to cut their journey short and arrange for a rental car to return to Brisbane.
Adding to their distress, the stolen LandCruiser was later discovered in Dandenong, but it had been significantly damaged. Offenders had set off a fire extinguisher inside, obscuring any potential evidence. The family not only lost their vehicle and the $250 of fuel it contained that morning but also personal belongings, including child car seats and identification documents, requiring extensive insurance claims and replacements.
