Oyster Horror: Steakhouse Oysters Lead to Brain Injury Lawsuit
10 Aug
Summary
- Oysters at a steakhouse allegedly caused a former firefighter severe brain damage.
- The contamination led to cardiac arrest and a months-long coma for the victim.
- A seven-figure sum in medical bills has already been incurred by the family.

A lawsuit has been filed against Gibsons Steakhouse in Oak Brook, with a former Cicero firefighter alleging that contaminated oysters served at the establishment led to severe brain injuries. The 44-year-old U.S. Marines veteran, Joe Belgio, reportedly contracted Etheropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and Plesiomonas shigelloides from raw oysters.
As a consequence, Belgio experienced cardiac arrest and remained in a coma for several months, resulting in permanent and catastrophic brain damage, according to the legal filing. His family states that his medical expenses have already reached seven figures and require ongoing specialized rehabilitation and therapeutic care.
Belgio is remembered by his family and community as a devoted father and youth sports coach. A fundraiser has been established online by friends and colleagues to assist with the costs of his necessary inpatient therapy.
