A rapid series of break-ins in the west end of St. John's over the weekend has led to 18 charges against a 31-year-old suspect. The incidents began around 4 a.m. Saturday with a break-and-enter on Heavy Tree Road, where the suspect had already fled before police arrived. Officers discovered an abandoned, stolen vehicle on the same road, believed to be connected to the suspect.
Within minutes, two more break-in reports came from neighboring homes. One incident at 4:06 a.m. was followed by another at 4:14 a.m., which involved an alleged altercation resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to the homeowner. The suspect reportedly fled the second scene on the victim's bicycle.
Using police dogs, law enforcement apprehended the man around 4:40 a.m. near Robert E. Howlett Drive after a brief struggle. The suspect, who initially provided a false name and showed signs of impairment, refused a drug recognition examination. He is now facing charges including robbery with violence, theft, and assault causing bodily harm, in addition to several outstanding warrants.
