St Basil's Homes for the Aged in Victoria has been issued a $150,000 fine by the Victorian County Court. This fine comes after 50 residents perished at the facility during Australia's deadliest coronavirus outbreak in 2020. The workplace watchdog, WorkSafe, had charged the home with failing to provide adequate safety measures for employees.
Specifically, St Basil's pleaded guilty to failing to ensure a safe working environment between March and July 2020. While 45 residents died from COVID-19 complications, a further five deaths are attributed to alleged neglect according to a coronial inquest. The families affected have expressed deep sadness and anger over the penalty.
