Sri Lanka Police Nab Suspect in Rs. 542,000 Online Scam

Sri Lanka Police have arrested a 38-year-old woman from the Batuwatta area as part of an ongoing investigation into an online scam. The suspect is accused of using a Telegram group to entice individuals with promises of earning money through an online business. This scheme resulted in victims depositing a total of Rs. 542,877. Of this amount, Rs. 66,999 was defrauded from the unsuspecting individuals. The arrest took place yesterday morning, following a complaint lodged on February 10, 2024. The North Western Province Unit of the Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) initiated the probe into the online fraud. Further investigations are currently underway to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify any other individuals involved.
