On Tuesday morning, a Spokane County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man outside Evergreen Middle School in Spokane Valley. The incident prompted a lockdown of the school after approximately 11:30 a.m. when a caller reported a suspicious, possibly armed man approaching the campus.
Responding deputies arrived within minutes and confronted the individual. Sheriff John Nowels stated the man aggressively threatened the deputy, leading to the shooting. The involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Investigators discovered a suspicious package near the school, which contributed to the prolonged lockdown and slower evacuation of students. This package was later detonated by a disposal unit around 1:30 p.m. The Spokane Independent Investigative Response team is overseeing the investigation.
School officials confirmed all students were safe and arranged for parents to reunite with their children at Valley Real Life Church. Counselors will be available to support students who experienced the traumatic events. Information regarding Wednesday's school schedule will be communicated later, with the immediate priority being the reunification of students with their families.
