Spain Deploys Military as Migrant Tide Overwhelms Ceuta

Spain has announced the deployment of its military forces to Ceuta, a Spanish exclave bordering Morocco, to address a significant border crisis. This action follows a surge of thousands of migrants who breached the border fence into the territory. Local authorities in Ceuta had formally requested the central government in Madrid to declare a national emergency, citing security concerns and an overwhelmed migrant reception capacity.

Civil Guard officers described the situation as "absolute chaos" with the border having "totally collapsed." The influx includes men, women, and children, primarily from Morocco. While the exact cause remains unclear, the escalation occurred after a recent surge in attempts to reach Ceuta, including by sea, which had resulted in at least three reported deaths earlier in the week.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is scheduled to visit Ceuta to evaluate the evolving situation. Despite the requests from local officials, the national government stated it could not declare a national emergency based on current migration legislation, though it emphasized co-operation with Moroccan authorities to manage the situation and facilitate returns. The territory has previously experienced similar, though often smaller, migrant influxes.
