A 39-year-old man, Matia Patika, was found dead near a drain in Rayagada district, Odisha, on September 3rd. His death is linked to accusations of practicing sorcery that allegedly caused harm to villagers. Twelve residents of Kakitra village, aged between 20 and 35, were arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder.
According to police, the accused harbored resentment against Matia Patika, who was isolated from the community. They allegedly ambushed him on September 2nd while he was returning home on his motorcycle. He was assaulted with a cudgel, and his body was subsequently thrown into a drain. The perpetrators also fled with his motorcycle.
Authorities have seized the cudgel believed to be used in the assault, twelve mobile phones belonging to the accused, and the deceased's motorcycle. The investigation is ongoing as police piece together the events leading to this fatal encounter.
