In August 2019, 17-year-old Solomon was fatally stabbed in Brixton, south west London, while shielding a female friend from an attacker. The incident occurred after a brief confrontation escalated into violence. Solomon, remembered as a kind, sociable, and community-oriented young man, was born in 2001 and had recently completed his college registration for a health and social care course.
His mother, Segen Ghebrekidan, has since dedicated her life to fighting knife crime. Nine days after his murder, she organized a memorial gathering that drew 500 attendees. She leads the 'Brixton Says No to Knife Crime' initiative, protests, and has established support groups for women affected by youth violence.
Through fundraising, Segen has funded bleeding control kits for community use. She also runs workshops at the Baytree Centre, providing a safe space for women to discuss grief and trauma related to knife crime. This proactive approach emphasizes education and community involvement as crucial in combating the issue.
Solomon's killer, also 17 at the time, was found guilty of murder in March 2020 and sentenced to detention. Despite ongoing harassment and vandalism at Solomon's grave, Segen remains resolute in her mission to ensure her son is remembered not just as a victim, but as a hero.
