13 Feb
Summary

- Killing occurred in a luxury five-star hotel in Ireland.

Henry McGowan, 31, was acquitted by reason of insanity for the November 2024 death of his father, John McGowan, 66, at the Ballyfin Demesne hotel in County Laois, Ireland. The Dublin court heard that McGowan, from New York, suffers from schizoaffective disorder. His father had flown to Ireland after his son experienced a psychotic episode.
Prosecutors stated McGowan beat and strangled his father in the hotel, believing he was a prophet and his father part of an evil conspiracy. This followed a disturbing incident involving an infant on a flight to Paris in 2022, leading to psychiatric hospitalization. McGowan's mental state deteriorated again in New York in October 2024 before he fled to Europe.
His father, John, booked the luxury hotel hoping to get his son admitted to a hospital. Despite pleas for his son not to run, John was later killed by Henry, who was found in the hotel library. A psychiatrist testified that it took days for McGowan to comprehend the events after his delusions lifted.
