A 47-year-old North Fort Myers man, Joshua Cullen, has been arrested and charged in connection with the disposal of his mother's body. The Lee and Charlotte County Sheriff's Offices announced his arrest, detailing a shocking case of alleged deception and disregard for human dignity.
Cullen is accused of transporting his deceased mother's body from Lee County to Charlotte County. Authorities state he wrapped her in a rug, secured her with cinder blocks and chains, and then submerged her in the Peace River. The grim discovery was made by boaters who spotted the submerged package.
Investigators found human remains on March 29th, which were later identified as Cullen's mother. Evidence, including license plate reader data showing Cullen's vehicle traveling towards the disposal site with a wheelbarrow, linked him to the crime. He reportedly lied to deputies about his mother's whereabouts, claiming she was hospitalized or had left with someone.
Authorities believe Cullen continued living in his home with his deceased mother for an unknown period before disposing of her body. He faces charges of neglect of an elderly person and abuse of a dead human body, with his bond set at $50,000.
