An inquest has opened into the tragic death of Liam Potts, a 22-year-old soldier who served with the Coldstream Guards. His body was discovered in the River Tyne on August 18, near Wylam Bridge.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 15. Police received reports of a disturbance at The Boathouse pub and a subsequent collision involving a car and pedestrians on Wylam Bridge.
Potts was on the bridge at the time of the collision. He entered the water minutes after the incident, although he was not struck by the car. The provisional cause of death is cardio-respiratory arrest.
Authorities are still investigating potential links between the pub disturbance and the bridge collision. Two men, aged 22 and 23, have been re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and released on bail. A man and a woman, both in their 20s, sustained serious injuries in the collision.
