- The organization smuggled approximately 20,000 undocumented immigrants between 2019 and 2024.

Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul, a 52-year-old Guatemalan national, pleaded guilty on Friday to leading a vast human smuggling network and admitted to holding immigrants captive until payment was received. His operation, active from 2019 to 2024, facilitated the movement of approximately 20,000 undocumented immigrants into the United States.
Renoj-Matul, also known by aliases such as "Turko" and "El Jefe," confessed to conspiracy charges and hostage-taking. Immigrants were charged between $15,000 and $18,000 for the perilous journey, with Mexican smuggling groups involved in border crossings. The organization utilized smuggling cells and stash houses, including one on James M. Wood Boulevard in Los Angeles' Westlake district.
Prosecutors revealed that Renoj-Matul held two individuals hostage in 2024 due to non-payment. One victim was detained for two months, with threats made to their mother about the victim returning "in a box." Another immigrant was held for four months before release upon payment. Co-defendants are scheduled for trial in April 2026, while Renoj-Matul faces a potential life sentence at his October 2026 sentencing hearing.
