Summary
- Forty prolific suspects caused over 5,000 shoplifting offences.
- Shoplifting incidents increased by over 75% in a decade.
- Cleveland Police saw the largest yearly percentage rise in offences.
Shoplifting incidents have seen a dramatic surge in north-east England and Cumbria, with a more than 75% increase over the last decade. Analysis reveals that just 40 prolific shoplifters are connected to at least 5,000 offences in the region within the past five years.
Home Office figures indicate a significant rise, with over 37,000 shoplifting cases in the North East and Cumbria in 2025-2026, up from 21,000 in 2014-2015. Cleveland Police experienced the largest yearly percentage increase in shoplifting across England and Wales, with a nearly 15% rise between 2025-26.
Cleveland's shoplifting rate stands at 15.9 incidents per 1,000 people, nearly double the national average. Notably, Hartlepool recorded 24.7 incidents per 1,000 people. While Cumbria saw most top suspects summoned to court or charged, over half of cases in Northumbria and Cleveland forces concluded without a suspect being found.
