Shoplifting Surge: Businesses Face Billions in Losses
17 Feb
Summary
- Shoplifting causes billions in losses nationwide annually.
- Workers take on security roles to combat theft.
- Retail theft increased 93% from 2019 to 2024.

Shoplifting is imposing billions of dollars in annual losses across the nation, creating significant challenges for businesses. This surge in retail theft directly impacts consumers through higher prices and leads to the closure of stores, reducing shopping options.
Employees are often compelled to assume dual roles as sales associates and security guards to mitigate losses. They implement protocols, monitor suspicious activity, and in some cases, involve law enforcement. This extra duty is crucial for small businesses that cannot absorb significant financial setbacks.
Data from 2019 to 2024 reveals a dramatic 93% increase in shoplifting reports, according to a National Retail Federation survey. The total estimated nationwide losses reached an alarming $112 billion. Popular retail chains like Dick's House of Sport and Ulta Beauty have reported numerous theft incidents.
Incidents at specific Dick's House of Sport locations over the past four years include 34 thefts in Beavercreek, 65 in Huber Heights, and 53 in Miami Township. Similarly, Ulta Beauty stores in these areas reported 45, 55, and 63 thefts, respectively. These figures underscore the widespread nature of organized retail crime.
