26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Shane Tamura had CTE, a degenerative brain condition
- Tamura accused NFL of concealing brain injury dangers
- Tamura killed 4 people, including an NYPD officer, before taking his own life
On July 28, 2025, Shane Tamura, a man from Las Vegas, drove to the NFL headquarters in New York and opened fire in the lobby and upper floors, killing four people, including an NYPD officer. Tamura, armed with a high-powered rifle, then took his own life.
The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has now confirmed that Tamura had Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head trauma. In a note found in Tamura's pocket, he had requested that his brain be studied, accusing the NFL of "concealing the dangers to players' brains to maximize profits."
The medical examiner's office stated that their neuropathology experts found "unambiguous diagnostic evidence of CTE" in Tamura's brain tissue, classifying it as low-stage CTE. While the office did not indicate whether CTE contributed to Tamura's actions, the findings have raised further questions about the NFL's handling of brain injuries among its players.
