Sheffield Suburb Becomes 'Gunthorpe' Amidst Shooting Epidemic
18 Mar
Summary
- Sheffield suburb nicknamed 'Gunthorpe' due to surge in violent gun crime.
- Gangs convert blank weapons into firearms, fueling a shooting epidemic.
- Community and police launch new initiative to combat escalating violence.

Residents of Sheffield's Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe areas are living in fear, with one suburb earning the grim moniker 'Gunthorpe' due to a dramatic increase in violent gun crime. The area has become a hotspot for gangs and drug dealers who are increasingly converting blank weapons into functional firearms, resulting in a local shooting epidemic.
Recent incidents have deeply unsettled the community. In December of last year, a gun was fired at an address with a child present, and a 32-year-old man, Kassim Mohammed, was fatally shot last September. Despite arrests, no charges have been filed. The heightened crime has led to a common sight of police cordons and investigators on the neglected council estates.
This surge in violence is part of a broader trend across South Yorkshire, with 168 firearms offenses recorded in the year ending June 2025. These incidents involve young offenders and sophisticated criminal networks, prompting a new community initiative called 'Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe Together.' This collaborative effort aims to tackle the root causes of crime, including drug supply networks and socio-economic challenges, to make the community feel safer.
Law enforcement acknowledges the severity of the situation, with Detective Superintendent Nicola Shimwell emphasizing the police's commitment. The dedicated Armed Crime Team and Operation Fortify are actively working to target offenders and remove guns from the streets. However, police stress the vital need for public information to aid their efforts in apprehending those involved and preventing further violence.
