A special court in Nedumangad, Kerala, has handed down life sentences to seven men for their involvement in the 2016 murder of Vishnu, a 19-year-old resident of Kannanmoola. The court found the seven guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The brutal killing on October 7, 2016, reportedly followed a fallout between two criminal gangs. Vishnu was allegedly targeted because he was perceived to be close to Puthenpalam Rajesh, who was involved in a December 2015 murder. Vishnu's parents and aunt sustained injuries during the home invasion.
An eighth accused, Suresh, was also convicted but his sentence was not pronounced as he had passed away. Five other individuals were acquitted by the court. The investigation involved multiple police units, with a revised chargesheet filed after initial concerns about the probe. The prosecution presented 48 witnesses and extensive evidence during the trial.
