Serial Killers Target "Mom-Lookalikes": New Study

A recent study suggests that serial killers may exhibit a pattern in their victim selection, often choosing individuals who share facial resemblances with their mothers. This phenomenon is believed to stem from lingering childhood trauma, where offenders may unconsciously seek out victims who represent figures from their past who caused them harm. Notorious murderers like Ted Bundy and Ed Kemper are cited as examples, with observers noting similarities between their victims and their mothers or early partners.

To aid investigations, particularly in cold cases, scientists have developed a forensic intelligence tool. This software analyzes 55 facial measurements from photographs to compare subtle facial geometry between victims. The lead author, Professor Brendan Chapman, indicated the tool has the potential for AI automation, allowing for rapid screening of large numbers of victim images. While not a replacement for DNA evidence, this technology offers investigators a new starting point to identify potential links where other evidence may be degraded or absent.
