A disturbing incident unfolded near Kolkata's Girish Park metro station on December 26, when three senior citizens were allegedly assaulted. The victims, aged 64, 61, and 70, had reportedly intervened to protest against public drinking and indecent behaviour by a group of youths near the metro station.
The altercation escalated when the youths, who were allegedly intoxicated, returned after a brief departure and physically assaulted the seniors. Two of the injured individuals were taken to Medical College Hospital. A written complaint was filed the same night at Girish Park Police Station.
Significant delays in police action, with a case registered over a week later on January 6, prompted local protests on January 7. Demonstrators questioned the police's role and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, who were allegedly roaming freely and had threatened the victims. Authorities stated that investigations, including reviewing footage and victim identification, were ongoing.
