- The theft occurred days before Remembrance Day, upsetting locals.

A brazen theft occurred at a Selkirk Dairy Queen just days before Remembrance Day when a woman allegedly stole the store's poppy donation box. Security footage captured the suspect taking the box, which contained an estimated $30 to $35, and concealing it before exiting.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, has deeply disturbed the Dairy Queen owner, Jinav Patel, who expressed his disbelief at the "heartless" act. He mentioned the woman had previously visited the store asking for free food, a request that was denied before the alleged theft.
Local authorities, the Selkirk RCMP, confirmed they are aware of the theft and have identified a suspect, though no arrest has been made as of Friday, November 6, 2026. The theft has also drawn strong condemnation from the Selkirk Legion branch.
Allan Coumont, the poppy officer for the Selkirk Legion, voiced his disgust, highlighting that the funds collected are crucial for assisting veterans and their families with essential needs, such as personal care home expenses or lift chairs.
