Human remains found on a US mountainside have been identified as John Gillies, a missing Scottish man from East Dunbartonshire. The skeletal remains, estimated to be 85% complete, were discovered by forest workers near Sweetwater Gap, Wyoming, on September 6, 2025. Local police believe the remains had been on the mountainside for approximately six years.
A 14-member team, including Sublette County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue, meticulously searched a 20-mile area. Investigators recovered personal items and, in collaboration with Interpol and Police Scotland, successfully identified the deceased.
On June 30, 2026, DNA analysis confirmed the identity of John Gillies, who would have turned 69 this year. His family has been informed, and arrangements are being made to repatriate his remains to Scotland. Sheriff KC Lehr praised the extensive local, state, federal, and international partnerships that led to providing answers for the family.
