SC: Admit Cards Need Pass Certificates for ID
25 Feb
Summary
- Madhyamik admit cards can supplement identity proof, not stand alone.
- Pass certificates are mandatory to prevent fraud and outdated records.
- Election officials must submit pending documents by 5 PM tomorrow.

The Supreme Court recently issued a directive clarifying the use of Madhyamik admit cards for identity verification during West Bengal's Special Intensive Revision exercise. A two-member bench, including Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, ruled that these admit cards can only be accepted as supplementary documentation for identity verification when presented alongside a student's pass certificate.
This clarification addresses concerns that admit cards alone could be misused. While an admit card contains essential details like father's name and date of birth, it does not confirm the completion of studies. The court emphasized that the admit card supplements the pass certificate, rather than replacing it, to prevent potential fraud and the use of outdated records.
Furthermore, the court has set a firm deadline for election officials, requiring them to submit all documents received before February 15 that have not yet been processed. This submission must be completed by 5:00 PM tomorrow to ensure the timely publication of the final voter list towards the end of February.
