On Saturday afternoon, officers in Savannah responded to an apartment following a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute. A woman had reportedly been chased from the apartment by a man, Malik Hendrix. Upon arrival, officers confirmed an argument had occurred, and witnesses alleged a child was thrown into a dumpster during the altercation. The woman and her child were located, and the child was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Hendrix later approached officers, allegedly keeping his right hand concealed within his jacket. Despite repeated commands to show his hands, he did not comply. When Hendrix then revealed his hand, pointing what was identified as a cellphone toward the officers, three officers discharged their firearms, hitting him multiple times. A K-9 unit was also deployed during the encounter, resulting in further injuries to Hendrix. He was transported to a hospital, and his condition remains undisclosed. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent review of the officer-involved shooting.
