In rural Saskatchewan, Lyle Cisna died after a 10-hour delay in a police wellness check. Cisna was found on his home's floor, bleeding from a head wound, on April 3, 2024, following an altercation with Trey Berland. Despite a call requesting an officer to check on him, the Maidstone RCMP officer did not respond until after 4:30 p.m., over 10 hours later.
Berland was subsequently convicted of manslaughter for causing Cisna's death during a drunken argument. The officer who delayed the response, Const. Kelan Henderson, was charged with breach of trust but the Crown stayed the charge in May 2025. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) had recommended the charge.
Cisna's family expressed frustration and a lack of closure, questioning the handling of the welfare check and the subsequent stay of proceedings against the officer. Henderson had previously been involved in other incidents, including a case where officers did not search for a missing woman who later died of hypothermia.
