Steven Beatty, a 24-year-old man described as sweet and helpful, was the victim of a homicide on Montreal Lake Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan. Police were called to a home on June 1 around 1:10 a.m. CST and found Beatty, who was declared deceased by EMS. An arrest warrant was issued for Trent John Bird, 19, on a charge of manslaughter with a firearm. Bird was later apprehended in Prince Albert.
Beatty's family and friends are in shock, describing him as someone who was not involved in conflict. His cousin, Kimberley Beatty, noted his compassionate speaking style and how he always offered hugs and smiles. He recently worked as a child-care worker, organizing activities and meals for youth. His life was marked by earlier tragedies, including the deaths of his mother and brother.
Agnes Naytowhow, who acted as a surrogate mother to Beatty, stated he briefly visited her home before the incident on the night he died. Beatty, who had connections to Montreal Lake and Timber Bay, was also remembered for his passion for soccer and coaching. His family is struggling to cope with the profound loss.
