TV Star Sarah Khalifa Gets Death Sentence for Drug Ring

A well-known Egyptian television presenter, Sarah Khalifa, 39, has been sentenced to death by an Egyptian court. Khalifa and 11 co-defendants were found guilty of forming an organized criminal gang responsible for manufacturing and trafficking narcotics. The verdict, delivered by a Cairo court, includes charges of procuring materials for drug manufacturing, intent to traffic, and possession of unlicensed firearms. This severe sentence followed a required consultation with the Grand Mufti of Egypt for his religious opinion on capital cases. The ruling is currently subject to appeal. Investigations revealed the defendants imported materials from abroad to produce synthetic drugs. During the operation, authorities confiscated more than 750kg of narcotics and related raw materials. Two apartments were discovered functioning as drug laboratories, and unlicensed firearms and ammunition were also seized. In a separate legal matter, Khalifa and some defendants received a five-year prison sentence for kidnapping and assaulting a young man. Egypt's legal framework permits the death penalty for offenses including drug trafficking, premeditated murder, and terrorism.
