Summary
- Man in his 40s was exercising with a weighted gym vest.
- Police response was due to mistaken identity of gym equipment.
- The incident caused significant concern within the local Jewish community.

An exercise session in Mandley Park, Salford, on Friday, March 20, led to a significant armed police response when a man in his 40s was reported as a "suspicious male." The man was wearing a weighted gym vest and carrying a skipping rope, equipment mistaken by onlookers for a bomb.
Dramatic images circulated online, falsely claiming he was wearing a suicide vest. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) quickly clarified it was a "false alarm," stating the man was exercising as part of his fitness regime, recommended by his doctor for type two diabetes and heart issues.
The incident occurred near Salford's Jewish community and a synagogue, amplifying concerns given a past terror attack. The man, who moved from Albania 25 years ago, cooperated fully with officers, understanding the need for caution. He was detained for a few hours before being released with no further action.
Members of the Jewish community expressed gratitude for the police's swift response, highlighting the current global anxiety faced by Jewish people. GMP confirmed no threat to the wider community.
