Trusty the K9's Life-Saving Legacy Honored

Salem Police announced the sudden death of K9 officer Trusty, a bloodhound who served for three years and died at the age of 4. Trusty and his handler, Officer Johnny Whitaker, were a formidable team, credited with locating six missing individuals and recovering significant crime-related evidence during their time together. Trusty joined the agency in February 2023 and passed away on June 13 while receiving treatment for a medical condition.

Trusty was renowned for his gentle nature and was described as having a "very soft and shmushy-faced" demeanor. He earned a Life Saving Award for his remarkable achievement in locating an elderly man who had been missing for 30 hours. The duo also dedicated time to community engagement, participating in school presentations and local events.

Officer Whitaker fondly recalled Trusty's love language being affection, noting the dog's polite refusal of treats in favor of raw hot dogs. The emotional support Trusty provided to community members, including a veteran living in a care home, was also highlighted. The Salem Police Department expressed their deep condolences to Officer Whitaker and his family, stating that Trusty will be profoundly missed.
