A court clerk, Om Chauhan, was apprehended on Thursday evening in Rudrapur for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,500. The money was reportedly demanded from a litigant to facilitate the filing of a compromise petition related to a case under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Officials from the vigilance establishment verified a complaint lodged by a resident of Mundiya Pistaur, who alleged Chauhan demanded the sum as court fee despite the parties having settled their dispute. A trap was set, leading to Chauhan's arrest on the court premises while allegedly receiving the bribe.
The operation led to a brief commotion as lawyers present objected to the plainclothes vigilance team. The situation de-escalated after officials presented high court authorization, and local police restored order. Chauhan was taken to Haldwani for further legal proceedings.
