10 Apr
Summary
- A woman died from internal bleeding post-caesarean delivery.
- A court ordered a hospital and doctors to pay Rs20 million.
- The hospital lacked adequate emergency and ICU facilities.

A Karachi civil court mandated a Rs20 million compensation payment from a private hospital and its doctors to the family of a woman who died following a caesarean section. The deceased, Kishwar Afsar, 30, passed away from internal bleeding in May 2002, after delivering a baby girl. Her husband initiated a lawsuit, alleging that the surgical site showed significant bleeding immediately post-operation, and that hospital staff delayed contacting the primary surgeon.
Court observations indicated that the deceased was admitted to Dr. Ghafoor Medical Centre on May 31, 2002, for a caesarean section. Following the procedure, she experienced excessive bleeding and pain. The court noted that blood was not adequately pre-arranged and that the attending doctor left post-surgery. The hospital reportedly lacked sufficient ICU and ventilator facilities, leading to the patient being referred to another hospital in critical condition.
