In Ahmedabad, a man was deceived out of Rs 24.75 lakh by a couple who purported to arrange a UK visa with a work permit.
The victim, Nipam, befriended a female colleague, Nikita Soni, in 2021. She claimed her husband, Raj Soni, resided in the UK and could assist with visa applications.
In 2022, Nikita informed Nipam her visa was approved and encouraged him to apply, assuring him of her husband's assistance. Nipam's wife agreed to the plan, and Nikita later proposed arranging a UK visa for Rs 25 lakh, offering a refund if unsuccessful.
Nipam made payments totaling Rs 24.75 lakh over the next year, despite attending a Zoom interview and receiving a job letter from BUPA. When the visa failed to materialize and his money was not returned, Nipam lodged a complaint with the Sola police.
The police have registered a cheating and criminal breach of trust case against Raj and Nikita Soni. An investigation is underway, with authorities examining the couple's bank accounts and relevant visa documents.
