Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested businessman Nishit Patel in a significant cheating case totaling Rs 16.24 crores. The alleged fraud victim is Habiba Jaffrey, wife of Bollywood actor Jaaved Jaaferi. The case, involving six accused including a BMC Assistant Commissioner, was registered at Khar Police Station.
The accused purportedly deceived the Jaffrey family by fabricating connections with influential builders and senior government figures. They convinced the family to invest in the "New Kamalkunj" redevelopment project in Bandra West, promising substantial returns and swift property possession.
Investigators revealed that fake documentation, including letters of interest and fabricated registration papers, were used to establish trust. The invested money was subsequently channeled through various company accounts.
During interrogation, Nishit Patel reportedly confessed to his role in creating these fraudulent documents. Police are now examining the possibility of similar schemes targeting other celebrities and public figures.
Habiba Jaffrey had previously received a BMC notice regarding property tax for her Andheri bungalow in April 2024. An acquaintance introduced her to BMC Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Patil, who allegedly advised her family to invest after initially offering help with the tax issue, thus drawing them into the fraud.
