An inquest is underway in Lincoln concerning the death of Robert Gracey, 39, who passed away in police custody in the early hours of September 29, 2021. The proceedings heard allegations that Mr. Gracey was twice punched in the stomach and twice in the leg by officers after being restrained. His wife expressed heartbreak, stating he endured violence in the last hour of his life.
Mr. Gracey was initially found in an anxious state and taken to the hospital, later being released. He then made multiple 999 calls before going to Gainsborough Police station and banging on a window. He was subsequently restrained by six officers and placed in a police van. His condition deteriorated, leading to an ambulance call and his eventual pronouncement of death at Lincoln County Hospital.
Witnesses described Mr. Gracey exhibiting extreme stress and mental health struggles in the days prior. His wife confirmed his worsening mental health and shared the devastation his death, occurring weeks before his 40th birthday, has caused the family. The inquest is expected to continue for two weeks.
