A new Netflix documentary delves into the disturbing case of Robert Black, a serial killer responsible for the murders of at least four young girls during the 1980s. Black, who worked as a delivery driver, used his van to abduct and kill his victims, moving between police jurisdictions to evade capture for nine years.
The two-part series features interviews with law enforcement officials and the families of those who suffered. It recounts the "harrowing" investigation that eventually led to Black's arrest in 1990 after a public intervention prevented another abduction attempt.
Initially convicted in 1993 for the murders of Susan Maxwell, Caroline Hogg, and Sarah Harper, Black received life sentences. It wasn't until 2011 that he was also convicted of the 1981 murder of Jennifer Cardy, his first known victim. He was serving significant sentences for these crimes.
Robert Black died in Maghaberry Prison in Northern Ireland in 2016 at the age of 68. Following his death, police revealed they were on the verge of charging him with the murder of 13-year-old Genette Tate, who disappeared in 1978. Investigators expressed deep regret that Black could not be brought to justice for this final crime.
