Secret Archive Hid Decades of Abuse in RI Diocese

Summary
- 75 priests abused over 300 children since 1950.
- Diocese hid abuse allegations in a secret archive.
- Bishops prioritized scandal minimization over victim safety.

A six-year investigation by Rhode Island's Attorney General has revealed that Catholic priests sexually abused over 300 children, with at least 75 clergy members implicated since 1950. The report details how bishops within the Catholic Diocese of Providence consistently prioritized minimizing scandal over protecting children.
Findings indicate that the diocese maintained a secret archive containing extensive records of abuse allegations, internal investigations, and settlement details. Accused priests were frequently transferred to new assignments or sent to treatment facilities, rather than facing legal consequences or removal from ministry.
One example cited is that of priest Robert Carpentier, accused in 1992 of abuse that occurred in the 1970s. He resigned, received treatment, and later went on sabbatical before retiring in 2006, remaining supported by the diocese until his death.
Of the 75 clergy identified, only 20 faced criminal charges, and just 14 were convicted. A dozen were laicized. Attorney General Peter Neronha stated that the actual number of victims and abusers is likely much higher.
The investigation, launched in 2019, highlighted systemic failures, including the transfer of accused priests and instances where individuals reviewing abuse cases were themselves later accused of abuse. The diocese's cooperation with the investigation was noted, though it faced limitations, with the diocese refusing interviews of personnel overseeing abuse response.
