Rhode Island Drivers to Get Parking Fee Refunds

Rhode Island drivers who paid parking charges that appeared official but were not may soon be reimbursed. A $1.35 million settlement has been reached, addressing accusations that a parking operator used undisclosed charges and deceptive ticket notices. The agreement resolves consumer protection claims against UPP Global. State officials alleged the company engaged in unfair and deceptive practices concerning pricing and ticketing.

Officials stated that UPP Global did not clearly reveal parking costs and added fees labeled as sales tax. In several Rhode Island cities, the company allegedly used notices that resembled government documents, incorrectly implying potential harm to licenses or credit. This tactic may have pressured individuals into immediate payment, even for improper charges.

Rhode Islanders are eligible for refunds if they paid UPP parking tickets or charges designated as sales tax from October 1, 2019, through August 31, 2024. Attorney General Peter Neronha emphasized the importance of enforcing consumer protection laws to safeguard both consumers and businesses that operate legally. A third-party administrator will manage the refund process, contacting affected consumers directly and returning funds via their original payment method.
