3 Mar
Summary
- Doctor removed tissue from wrong side of patient's mouth.
- Misleading statements were made to the medical college.
- Doctor suspended for one month and fined $9,000.
A doctor in Regina has been suspended from practice for one month following a surgical error. Dr. Peter Chang was found to have removed tissue from the left side of a patient's mouth instead of the agreed-upon right side in June 2022. While the removed tissue was cancerous, the procedure was not what the patient had consented to.
Further compounding the issue, Dr. Chang made misleading statements to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan when initially questioned about the incident. He admitted guilt to unprofessional conduct charges. The college sanctioned him with a one-month suspension, a written reprimand, and an order to pay about $9,000 in investigation costs. Chang received his medical degree in 1978.
