- Sentencing marks a record for wildlife smuggling in Australia.

A Sydney man, aged 61, has been handed down an eight-year prison sentence for attempting to smuggle 101 native Australian reptiles. This sentence is a record for wildlife smuggling offenses in Australia. Investigators discovered the reptiles, including various lizards, skinks, and dragons, concealed within bags of popcorn and biscuit tins. These packages were intercepted before they could be sent to international destinations such as Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Romania.
The animals were posted in 15 separate packages between 2018 and 2023. The smuggler attempted to use others to mail the animals on his behalf but was identified through an investigation by government authorities and New South Wales police. Three other individuals were also convicted in connection with this crime.
Officials emphasized that the illegal wildlife trade is detrimental to conservation efforts and strips Australia of its unique biodiversity. The severe sentence is intended to serve as a strong warning to others involved in trafficking native wildlife for profit. Penalties for exporting protected wildlife without a permit can include up to 10 years imprisonment and substantial fines.
