John Hinckley Jr., 71, recently expressed his continued well wishes to actress Jodie Foster in an interview with the Mark Joseph Show. Hinckley infamously shot President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981, an act he has stated was motivated by a delusional obsession with Foster.
At 25 years old, Hinckley had become fixated on the then-18-year-old Foster after seeing her in the 1976 film 'Taxi Driver'. He believed he desired a 'union' with her. The assassination attempt also wounded Press Secretary James Brady and two other individuals.
Following a trial in 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He spent three and a half decades in a psychiatric facility before his release in 2022. Since his release, Hinckley has openly shown remorse and is now developing a career as a singer-songwriter.
Foster, who has rarely spoken on the matter, previously described Hinckley's actions in a 1982 Esquire article, stating, 'John Hinckley's greatest crime was the confusion of love and obsession.' She contrasted blissful love with pitiful, self-indulgent obsession.
