Israeli customs officials recently intercepted a smuggling attempt involving rare English Barb pigeons at the Yitzchak Rabin border crossing. The birds were discovered being transported from Jordan to Israel within a suitcase, cruelly restrained with their wings and beaks taped to prevent movement. This harmful practice endangered the pigeons' lives. The suspect, an east Jerusalem resident, stated he acquired the valuable breed in Jordan for his personal collection, denying any profit motive.
Agriculture Ministry veterinary services took custody of the confiscated pigeons to provide necessary treatment and care. An investigation has been launched into the incident, highlighting concerns about animal welfare and public health. Officials emphasized that animals entering without proper health checks can carry dangerous diseases and viruses, especially when kept in harsh conditions that threaten their well-being.
